Te Ika a Maui | Māori

 This week for Māori we were matching the meaning of Maori places in the North Island. 

We couldn't use google translate but we got clues by reading some parts of the places names and matching of the meanings words with the clues.

For example: Te Aroha = The love 

The reason why it matches is becuase aroha and love are the same thing. 

I found this activity challenging is because we couldn't use Maori Dictonary and I can't speak fluent Maori.

Maori Names

This week I matched English names with Maori names. 

We were given clues to help us match the names without using Maori dictonary. The guys names were in highlited in blue to help us match names. 

Next I tried to translate a conversation in Maori to English. We were allowed to use the maori dictonary to help us translate the sentences. 

For example: 

Tēna koutou katoa     Greeting to you all 

Ko John taku ingoa    My name is John 

Nō Whangarei ahau    Im from Whangarei 

Te kau ma waru ōku tau    I am 18 years old

I found this task hard becuse it was my first time doing translating converations from Maori to english.   

Kapa Haka Preformance

 Ls1 attended a Kapa Haka performance in our school hall. 

The Kapa Haka group came into our school hall and performed a dance and they were singing Waiata as their entrance. Some of the things we observed in their entrance was that one of the Kapa Haka members blew a Maori traditional horn called the Putatara. Another thing we saw was that another Kapa Haka member talked about the meaning of the Haka and the traditional Maori weapons.

The last thing we did was play a game called Matau and Maui. To play the game you need sticks (The sticks we used were called Rakau). Then a person says Maui or Matau. If the person says Maui we have to grab the stick on our left side. If the person says Matau we have to grab the stick on our right side.    

The last thing the Kapa Haka did in their performance was that they performed a Haka. Then our (Panmure Bridge school) Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka and we sang He Honore. 

I enjoyed experiencing the performance from the Kapa Haka group. My favourite part about their performance was their Haka and how our school Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka.

Maori Names | Maori

This week for Maori we learnt how to translate Maori names into English. 

First we learnt the Maori letters. For example: The letter j & s is the letter h in Maori. 

I used Maori dictonary to translate the names from Maori to english. For example: In Maori Sera is Hera.  I got every translated Maori name right. 

I enjoyed learning Maori names and would like to learn more.

Kupu | Maori

For our Maori session we did a task called Kupu. For the Kupu task we trasnslated maori words into english.  

First we translated the words in maori we already knew. We used maori dictonary to translate the words in maori to english we didn't know.   

I enjoyed todays maori and session and I also new some new words in maori. 

Te Tinana | Maori

For maori we learnt about body parts. 

First we highlighted the the body parts that we knew in te reo maori and left the body parts that we didn't know blank. 

Next we matched the body parts that knew with the english body parts. The body parts we didn't know we searched up on maori dictonary and matched them.

For our Maori session I had to made a number chart to practise numbers between eleven and ninety nine.

One of the numbers I practised was 34. In Maori 30 is toru te kau. 30 and 4 is toru te kau ma wha.

After we were given a list for numbers we had to translate from English to Maori, e.g. 64 would be ono te kau ma wha.

Kia Ora

My name is Kruse. I am Samoan, Maori and German. My favouite colour is green.
I am in LS1 at Panmure Bridge School. I enjoy Maths my favourite thing in Maths is times tables.
In my speare time I play Need For Speed Carbon and Rugby league live 3.
At home I also watch rugby league. My favourite teams are the Warriors and the North Queensland Cowboys.

This week for Maori we were learning the days of the week and months in Maori. First we learn the days of the week in Maori like Wenerei,Hàtarei and Paraire. Then we completed the other questions on a google doc.After we answered some questions about when is our birthday and we had to write down down the google doc in Maori.

For Maori we were learning the time in Maori.First we learnt the basic times in Maori and then we went and completed the harder times in Maori. We then went on to clock face generator to show the time we had translated from Maori to English.

For Maori we had to translate words and phrases into English. The words were to do with safety and phrases of safety like be calm Kia tau. After we had to write the English words into the box.

This week for Maori We had to get into a new group and we had to to watch the video that explain why Maori People ask where you are from they say it because there is an  understanding that is shared by Maori that everyone is linked and can be related to one another. By asking where you are from, you are looking to make connections to that person..

For Maori we had to watch 2 videos in Maori and them go on google translate and translate them into English put the lines to correct order .

We were watching a video about Puanga. People in New Plymouth celebrate Puanga because it's the closest place to see Puanga. We also made a poster of what we like but the translation was in Maori.

LI.To learn the seasons in Te Reo Maori.

The word for seasons in Maori is tau. Spring,Summer,Autumn and winter also have there own Maori names.We used the Te Ara website to learn these words.

For Maori we watched a legend of Taine and how there was 3 baskets and what was in it.

All of Taine's brothers didn't like the dark so they made a vote all of the brothers accept Taine voted.

So when the mother and father was split Taine wanted light, he was given 3 baskets.In the first one there was stars in the second one there was a moon in the last one there was a sun. Taine went out in a waka he went to put up the stars we was so happy we done a haka and he kicked the basket over full of stars he left it like that so he put the moon up there still was no light so he put the sun up and there was light.

We also had to make a poster for the juniors about patupaiarehe.

LI.To learn about patupaiarehe fairies and the geography of Aotearoa

 Patupaiarehe are fairies that live in forests.
They have magic powers like strength and once they touch you you turn into a fairy.
The patupaiarehe we learnt about today live on mt manganui.

We learnt about patupaiarehe and mt manganui by listening to the story of mauao and searching for information and using google maps.

Te Reo - Maori

LI.To learn the geography of Aotearoa.
Mount Maunganui is a mountain in Tauranga.
The Hunua and Waitakere rangers are mountains in Auckland.
Patupaiarehe are fairies that lived on these mountains in Maori myths.

I learned about the Patupaiarehe and mountains by listening to the 2 story's , The legend of Mauao and the Turehu wars.

I learned where the mountains are by looking on google maps.
