Commenting | SLJ 2020

This week for the Summer Learning Journey I commented on Rj's blogpost.

RJ's blogpost was about what he would by for each family member for christmas with a $100 budget.

I asked Rj what he would do with the left over $25 dollars he had and why would he spend the $25 dollars.

Kowhaiwhai Pattern | SLJ 2020

This week for the Summer Learning Journey I made a Koru pattern.

For my Koru pattern I repeatedly made a love heart. I made back backround green so it suits the black koru.

So far this has been my favrouite activty becuase I can customise the background and also make my own pattern designs.

Fishing False Teeth | SLJ 2020

This week for the summer learning Journey we did a activty called Fishing False Teeth.

We watched video and read an article of two friends fishing on a boat and speaking to each other. I made a comic strip of the two friends making a bet on who can catch a fish first.

I enjoyed making a comic strip becuase I could make my own story and write in the comic strip what they were saying.

Material Hunt | SLJ

In the first part of the SLJ we were introduced to nano girl, also known as Michelle Dickson. She is a educator who teaches kids in New Zealand about science.

For our first task with nano girl, we had to go for a scavenger hunt to find some materials that we would be using with for the next 6 weeks.

We used screencastify to showcase we found during the treasure hunt.

Sales Pitch Presentation | Inquiry

This week for inquiry my group and I presented our emergency shelter speech.

First we started to prepare ourselves and ready to present our speech and while we were getting ready we pratised our lines and fixed the mistakes.

Then we presented our speech and presentation slide and watched other people do their own. We explained reasons why we chose our own emergency shelter shape and why the materials that were included were good for the natural disaster that we also chose. While me and my group were presenting we held our models.

Last we had a discussion about who was going to be hired and some groups that was going to be fired.

I think that my gorup work on is to work on eye contact and being more confident when saying there lines. My gorup didn't reach the criteria becuase we didn't include our materials test sheet.

Te Ika a Maui | Māori

This week for Māori we were matching the meaning of Maori places in the North Island.

We couldn't use google translate but we got clues by reading some parts of the places names and matching of the meanings words with the clues.

For example: Te Aroha = The love

The reason why it matches is becuase aroha and love are the same thing.

I found this activity challenging is because we couldn't use Maori Dictonary and I can't speak fluent Maori.

Commanding Conversation | Writing

Commanding conversation is a can-do where people practice writing conversations. We used comanding conversation to get better at using descriptive speech and using punctuation when writing.

I wrote one conversation which is about three kids playing the grass.

Commanding conversation is a good way for me to practice writing dialogues.

Touch Mayhem | Kiwisport

This week we had our last sesssion for touch rugby.

We started our session off with a passing drill. A passing drill is when one person has the ball and passes it to the next person on the left.

Next we played a game of touch. While playing touch we used some skills and tips that we learnt from the past touch sessions like 3 and 2 man settle and driving up the feild in a straight line and then passing it out to the wingers.

I enjoyed playing touch and learning basic skills to use when playing with my friends. I need to work on passing the ball fast to my team when playing dummy half.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week was our fith session of touch rugby. Coach Mark recaped some skills we used in our game.

The skill we recaped was the three man settle. To do a threeman settle one person would run up to take the touch and then plant the ball. Dummy half would pick up the ball and then pass it to the third person.

After we practised we played a game of touch but we had to get into three groups. Two groups would play touch and one group would sit in the shelter and watch them play. All of the groups got a turn to play. The two and three man settle were used during the games.

I was able to drive up the feild using the three and two man settle with Farzana and Leon. I need to work on pushing up when the dummy half touches that ball so they can gain less meters.

Giraffe The Pelly And Me | Reading

The Giraffe The Pelly And Me is a childrens book made by Roald Dahl.

At the opening ceremony Billy gives a bag of candy to each friend. The monkey got a bag of Devils Drenchers, and the giraffe got a bag of Glumptious Globgobblers. The Duke Of Hampshire got a bag of Scarlet Scorchdroppers and the Pelly got Pishlets Pishlets.

Billy had to leave his friends to look after the bussiness and left the Giraffe, Pelly, Monkey and the Duke of Hampshire to clean the rest of the windows.

The Giraffe The Pelly And Me is a funny childrens book that is suitable for kids.

Maori Names

This week I matched English names with Maori names.

We were given clues to help us match the names without using Maori dictonary. The guys names were in highlited in blue to help us match names.

Next I tried to translate a conversation in Maori to English. We were allowed to use the maori dictonary to help us translate the sentences.

For example:
Tēna koutou katoa     Greeting to you all

Ko John taku ingoa    My name is John

Nō Whangarei ahau    Im from Whangarei

Te kau ma waru ōku tau    I am 18 years old

I found this task hard becuse it was my first time doing translating converations from Maori to english.

Resource Requisition | Inquiry

All natural disasters start from bad weather. The materials that are suitable against a volcano eruption are: steel door, chicken wire, aluminum sheets, and concrete walls.

The steel door was to get in and out of the shelter when a natural disaster starts or finishes. This material has been chosen because steel is strong.

The concrete walls are out for the base of the shelter and the roof.  This material has been  chosen to protect against lava because it provides a strong foundation for an emergency shelter.

The aluminum was used for the inside layer to stop lava from coming in.  This material was chosen because aluminum is strong.

The chicken wire was used to hold the shelter together and extra protection against lava.

This material has been chosen to protect against volcanic eruptions because it can give the structure more protection and strength against lava.

Lots of materials can help protect against different types of natural disasters.

Division | Maths

This week we learnt what division is and how to use division.

We made a google slide explaning what division is, place value in division, remainders in division and strategies that we can use in division. First we explained what division is. Division is spliting a gorup into equal peices.

Next we explained strategies that we could use in division. One of the easyest strategies we learnt was multiplcation and pitcures of groups. For example: 3 x 4 = 12 you can reverse that and make it division then the answer would be 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Then we explained what remainders are in division. For example: 149 ÷ 4. 8 ÷ 4 = 2 9 from the 149 is close to 8 so we could do 9 ÷ 4 = 2 r 1. then we divided the 40 by 4 which makes 10. Then we divded the 100 by 4 which made 25. Then we got our total 37 r 1. Instead of having remainder 1 we spilt the 1 into 4 quaters which made .25 and thwen added it on to the 37 which made 37 .25.

Lastly we explained the place value in division. When dividing big numbers and small numbers 10x bigger numbers move to the left once. For example:   120 ÷ 4 = 30. 12 ÷ 4 = 30 10x bigger numbers moves to left once.

Divison is a good strategy that can help you in multiplcation and fractions.

Kapa Haka Preformance

Ls1 attended a Kapa Haka performance in our school hall.

The Kapa Haka group came into our school hall and performed a dance and they were singing Waiata as their entrance. Some of the things we observed in their entrance was that one of the Kapa Haka members blew a Maori traditional horn called the Putatara. Another thing we saw was that another Kapa Haka member talked about the meaning of the Haka and the traditional Maori weapons.

The last thing we did was play a game called Matau and Maui. To play the game you need sticks (The sticks we used were called Rakau). Then a person says Maui or Matau. If the person says Maui we have to grab the stick on our left side. If the person says Matau we have to grab the stick on our right side.

The last thing the Kapa Haka did in their performance was that they performed a Haka. Then our (Panmure Bridge school) Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka and we sang He Honore.

I enjoyed experiencing the performance from the Kapa Haka group. My favourite part about their performance was their Haka and how our school Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka.

Novel Study | Reading

The Giraffe The Pelly and Me is a childrens book made by Roald Dahl.

After all of the window cleaners were offered to live at duke barn house they all got a wish each. The giraffe's wish was to have the most pink flower trees, the monkey's wish was to have lots of walnuts, the pelly's wish was to have all the fish and Billy's dream was to renovate an abandoned grubber shop into a grubber shop all over again.

The Duke grants the wish and helps Billy fix the grubber shop up and order candy from around the world to put in the shop.

Athletics Day Results | Maths

This week, we did a statistical investigation to figure out the average score of each group in Athletics Day.

First, we added up the data sets using a google sheet. To add data sets, we can use repeated addition or multiplication. We wanted to add the data sets up quickly, so we used multiplication. If a data set was 2+3+3+2+1+3+4+2, we could make it easier to solve this equation by doing (4x1) + (3x3) + (2x2) + (1x1) instead. 4x1=4, 3x3=9, 2x2=4, and 1x1=1. We add all of the totals up and it equals 18. This strategy is quicker than repeated addition because instead of adding up the numbers individually, you can add them up all at once.

Then, we needed to find the average group score. We added all of the groups points then divided the total by the amount of classes there are, which is 9. When we add all of the scores 19 + 17 + 19 + 26 + 17 + 24 + 18 + 18 + 24 = 182. Then tried to find the answer out with out using the google sheet formula. First I split 180 into 160 and 20. Then I divided 160 by 2 which made 80. I then took away 40 from the 80 which made 40 and then split 40 into 20. Then I took away 4 from the 20 to make 16. Then I split 16 into 8 2's wich makes 0.22222222 and then added the extra 20 wich made 20.22222222.

It is important to understand how to use statistical investigations because it can make adding, subtraction, multiplying or dividing numbers easier.

Athletics 2020

Panmure Bridge School held it's annual Athletics Day. Athletics Day is based around using the skills we have learnt over the past terms to run, jump and throw. There wrere 10 stations.

One of the stations we went to was called Rob the nest. The aim of this game is to have one person defending the balls and others going out to steal balls from other teams. Each ball is 1 point. If you get tagged you are frozen but you can be saved by a team mate.

There were many other athletic games like sponge relay, life savers, egg & spoon race, etc.

My favourite station was Sponge relay becuase you could get wet and go over and under objects.

We also did sprints. The year 1 - 4 did 50m sprints and the year 5 - 8 did 60m sprints. In the year 6 sprints I came 3rd.

I enjoyed doing sprints and Athletics day and would like to do it again. I would also like to give a big thanks to Mr Ogilvie for making athletics day possible.

Manaiakalani Film Festival

I went to the 13th Manaiakalani Film Festival in Hoyts Sylvia Park.

The first movie was ours, Covid. Our film was about people not hand sanitising and made fun of it.

Next we watched different films from different schools. Some of the films were based on the Covid 19 pandemic.

My favourite film was Tamaki Primary's Comunity Hero film becuase I like how they show dedication to the essential workers.

Screen Play | Writng

Screenplays are scripts that are converted into parts only. The actors line is center aligned under their name. The lines don't need speech marks because it could help what tone to use.

A screenplay scene number should be in all caps. The name also should be in caps and center aligned. If there is any extra information people would put it in brackets under their name.

Screenplays can give some descriptions on how actors should speak and it can also give more detail.

Knowing how to write a screenplay is importaint because actors understand how to say their lines and what their lines are.

Recapping Skills | Maths

This week we recapped the skills and knoledge we learnt from T4W4. The skills I learnt were money and converting measurements.

Fotu and me recapped the skills we learnt and showed each other how to do the skills on a whiteboard. The skill I learnt was that written algorithm has a name for each colum.

For example: The 100's colums name is H becuase it stands for hundreds.

The next skill I recapped was money. Xavier, Taua and me were showing each other on a white board how to add money up and learning how to tell the time. I learnt that written algorithm is a stratagey that can help you tell the time.

I found teaching hard but I enjoyed teaching others about converting measurement and money. I partners were good students becuase they helped me understand the skill.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week we learned how to do a three man settle.

After playing a game we practiced two man settle and three man settle. To do a two man settle the person A had to touch and put the ball under their feet and step under it. Then the person B had to get the ball and run forward. It was the same for the three man settle but with three people.

Lastly we played a game of touch. We had to walk through the game for the people who didn't know how to play the game. In this activity we used each skill that we learnt from the past few weeks.

I enjoyed doing this activity. I found this easy because I have done this before.

The year 5 five group played 4 games and the year 6 played 7 games. First the year 5 group played Sylvia Park a team. The year 5 PBS team lost 4 - 0.

The second game was year 5 PBS team v St Patricks. The game was team tied 1 - 1.

The next game was year 5 PBS vs Sylvia Park b team. The game was tied 2 -2 .

The final game we played was against Stonefeilds A team. Unfortently PBS year 5 team lost 1 - 4. The year 5 PBS team placed 5th.

I enjoyed playing and would like to play against more schools next year.

Money | Maths

NZ money works on a place value system. New Zealand's current money works on the 100's place value.

New Zealand money have 5 different coins and 5 different notes. There are 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, and $2 coins. There are $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar notes.

Here is a example on how the system works. If you had $10 and spent 3.20 the change you would get back is 6. 80 becuase 10 stubtracted by 3.20 = 6.80.

Money can be shown in many different ways. It's importaint to know to use money because it helps people understand the value of money.

Touch Rugby | KiwiSport

This week in touch we learnt some more basic skills like planting the ball.

First, we got into pairs of 2. We had to line up against the cone and plant the ball at 4 diffrent places.

After that, we practised touching people in a game. For the game, there was a non-bib group and a bib group. Each team had a certain amount of rugby balls and we needed to tag the people in the opposite team who had a rugby ball. If we got tagged we needed to plant the ball and go for a person who had a ball.

Lastly, we practiced being offence and defence. At first it was one vs one. A person from the defensive team tried to prevent the offensive team from getting a try.

I enjoyed this week's session, but found it easy because I have played touch before.

The Math Behind Lawn Mowing | Maths

Lawn mowing is a job that uses maths. Lawn mowing uses counting and measurement.

Lawn mowing uses measurement for measuring the body height of the lawn mower. If you don't measure the height of the lawn mower and the grass is long it could damage the lawn mower and hurt you.

Lawn mowing also uses counting for counting how much times you prime the lawn mower. If you don't count how much times you prime the lawn mower and over prime the lawn mower it can flood the engine.

Lawn mowing people need these maths skills to help them when mowing lawns.

Insulation | Inquiry

Insulation is a material that protects heat from escpaing.  5 insulation materials that LS1 tested were : Paper, glass, plastic, polystyrene and tin.

Good insulation is when the material protects the heat from escaping. Bad insulation is when the material is unsecure and the heat escapes.

The best insulator for keeping something hot is paper. The worst insulator for keeping something hot is glass.

The best insulator for keeping something cold is polystyrene. The worst insulator for keeping something cold is tin.

The best insulator for keeping things hot and cold is polystryene.

Kiwi Sport | Touch Rugby

For our kiwi sport session we learnt some basic skills for touch rugby.

First we learnt how to tap the ball, catching the ball and how to pass the ball. We then learnt how to pass the ball while a defender is marking you.  There were 2 runners and 1 defender. The winger had to pass the ball to the other team mate to score a try.

I enjoyed learning new skills and it is helpful to me when I play in touch interschool.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi sport

This week our kiwi sport was touch rugby. We were building up our confidence to pass and catch a rugby ball.

First we practiced getting confident with the ball by throwing and catching it in the air and not dropping it. We also practiced moving backwards and forwards while throwing and catching the ball.

Next, we chose a partner and passed the ball to each other. We used the letter "W" to catch the ball. We couldn't pass the ball foward, so the partner who was catching the ball had to be slightly behind the person with the ball.

Then, we played an activity to practice our skills. There were coloured hoops on the ground, and when the teacher called out a colour, we needed to put the ball into a hoop of that colour. The person with the ball had to put the ball down for their partner to pick up, and their partner could only pass the ball but they were not allowed to move with it.

I enjoyed this session of touch rugby and learning the basic skills.

Converting Measurements | Maths

Converting meaurements is to multiply or to divide height, length and width of something. There are four main measurements mm, m, cm and km.

When a number is multiplied by 10 the decimal point moves once to the right.

For example: If I mulitply 50.0 by 10 the decimal point moves to the right that makes it a bigger number. Making it 500.

When a number is divided by 100 the decimal point moves twice to the left.

For example: If I divide 500.0 by 100 the decimal point moves twice to the left that makes it a smaller number. Making it 5.00.

When multiplying by ten you can't "add" a O onto the end of the number, but you can shift the place value. The zero's indicate how many times you shift the place value. For example 10 moves once as it has 1 zero, where as 10000 would move 4 times as it has 4 zeros.

Place value house can help covert measurements.

Informal and Formal Language | Writing

Formality tells people when to use formal or informal language.

Formal langage and situations are when times when rules and politeness need to be followed.

For example: "Greetings" is a propper way for saying hello to someone.

Informal language situations are when times when rules and politeness don’t have to be followed.

For example: "Bro sup gee" is an informal way for saying hello.

Formal and informal language can be helpful to people when they go to use the correct word in a formal or informal situiation.

LI: to identify formal and informal language.

Here are some examples of informal and formal language:

Experiment | Inquiry

For inquiry we were doing experiments.

We did this experiment to see how much water sand, nappies, stones, paper towels, and cotton would absorb. We also did this expermeint to understand what a precisce experement is. The experiment my group was doing was seeing how much water nappies could absorb.

First we had to gather our materials to start the experement. The materials we gathered was a tote tray, nappies and water. Next we measured 100mls of water into a beaker.

Then we poured 100mls of water over a nappie to see how water the nappie would absorb.  Once we poured the water over the nappie we lifted the nappie up to see if it absorbed all of the water.

The results were the nappie absorbed all of the water.

I enjoyed doing this task and would like to do it again using a diffrent material.

Art Collabration

For art we recreated the gruffalo cover using pastels.

First our group  practised blending colours using cotton buds and combining two colours together. Then we added textures by adding more colours to make the colour darker. We compared to match  the section we were colouring in.

Next, we talked about blending the important parts of our section.

After that, my group collaborated with other groups on how they did their blending to make dark or light colours.

When we thought we are ready to do the final copy of the drawing, we each coloured a section of the final copy.

When each group has finished their section, Mr. Ogilvie put the pieces together. The whole picture of the Gruffalo looked amazing and magnificent. It was fun recreating the gruffalo cover using pastel. I feel proud of our art work. I would like to do it again.

Daily Routine | Writing

LI: to write a recount on one of the days of the week

This week we wrote a recount of our daily routine.

First, I chose a day of the week to write a recount on. I chose Saturday. Then we wrote down key phrases and words that relates to our daily routine such as - having a shower or getting dressed

Then we used the the ideas in our plan to make a recount of routines we do on a day.

Next, we proof read our work to make sure our recount includes the title, a reveal, events, and an ending. There should be four paragraphs for the events, each paragraph telling what happened before school, at school, after school and after dinner.

I enjoyed this activity, and found it a bit hard to revise my daily Saturday routine because on a Saturday for me it is pretty busy. One thing I think I could work on when writing recounts is making it more interesting to read instead of giving simple sentences.

Govening Topics | Reading

LI: To choose important governing topics by summarising all topics

Governing topics are things parties want to provide for the country, people and comunity when they get elected during election.

The two most important governing topics to me are: Education and health.

Health is about keeping people safe and healthy and providing more money and stop getting sick to help during the current covid 19 pandemic.

Education is about kids getting better education sources and teacher getting paid a fair salary for the work they are doing for the children.

If I voted and choose a governing topic, I would pick education and health. The reason why I picked health is because I want to keep myself healthy and safe under the covid 19 sitiuation. The reason why I chose education is I would like to learn new things while I am still at school.

Saftey Plans | Inquiry

 LI: to demonstrate prior knowledge

For inquiry we checked out the hazards, risk, and consequences that could happen during making a fire and smores.

First, we discussed different hazards and risk. Next we wrote it down. A hazard for the fire is the fire itself and the consequences is getting burnt.

Then, we discussed some consequences that could happen. Consequences can be how can we prevent it, who's responsibillity is it, and the emergency plan.

After, we made another saftey plan for making the smores with the fire. We repeated the same process but wrote down different hazards, risk and consequences. Then we made smores.

Mr Ogilvie lit up the fire and then demostrated how to roast the marshmellows. After he demostrated we made our own smores.

I found this activty hard because it was hard to cook the marsmallows.

Rounding | Maths

LI investigate units of time

Rounding is a math strategy that uses addition and division strategies.Rounding means to circle it to the nearest ten, hundred, thousands, etc.

Addition and division are both operations that are used for rounding. To round, the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.
Here comes the rounding part comes in so if the numbers are 5-9 they are called high five and the numbers that are 0-4 they are called four floor. Look for the last digit. Example: 21.85 now becomes 21.9 because 5 is above.
Rounding can help people get better at adding and dividing.

For inquiry we did a gruop task about risk assesment.

We did a recap about what a hazard and a risk is. A hazards is things that can cause harm to people, properties, and the enviroument. A risk is something that will cause harm to people, properties, and the enviroment.

Next we made a saftey plan for a simple activity. We wrote down what activity it is, the class level, number of students, and where the location is.

Then we had to answer questions like what could go wrong, what could cause it to go wrong, how could we prevent it, and whose resposibilty is it.

Lastly we thought of emergency plan which is going to be needed if a risk elevates to a more serious situation.

Rewrite | Writing

LI. re write a narrative
A rewrite is when you change parts of a story. I rewrited the story gruffalo.

To rewrite I changed the setting, charatcer, where the charcter meet the mouse and when the mouse describes the gruffalo's favoruite food inculding the chracters in it.

The change I made was changing the fox to a panther. The panthers setting is a oak wood house. I also changed the gruffalo favouite food from roasted fox to panthercotta.

Making Connections | Reading

LI. To identify and describe connections.
Connections have a similar idea as something else. There are three main connections text to self, text to text and text to world.

Text to self is when something links to something you have done.
For example - Fox hides in the dandelions to so he could eat mouse. My connection is that I snuck past my dad to watch the warriors game.

Text to text is when stories have similar ideas. For example - Snake chokes mouse to kill him. My connection is that in the Simpsons homer chokes bart when he gets cheeky.

Text to world is where the text links to something people do everyday. For Example - the squirrel goes to find food for her kids. My connection is that People buy food for themselves and kids.
