Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week was our fith session of touch rugby. Coach Mark recaped some skills we used in our game.

The skill we recaped was the three man settle. To do a threeman settle one person would run up to take the touch and then plant the ball. Dummy half would pick up the ball and then pass it to the third person.

After we practised we played a game of touch but we had to get into three groups. Two groups would play touch and one group would sit in the shelter and watch them play. All of the groups got a turn to play. The two and three man settle were used during the games.

I was able to drive up the feild using the three and two man settle with Farzana and Leon. I need to work on pushing up when the dummy half touches that ball so they can gain less meters.

Giraffe The Pelly And Me | Reading

The Giraffe The Pelly And Me is a childrens book made by Roald Dahl.

At the opening ceremony Billy gives a bag of candy to each friend. The monkey got a bag of Devils Drenchers, and the giraffe got a bag of Glumptious Globgobblers. The Duke Of Hampshire got a bag of Scarlet Scorchdroppers and the Pelly got Pishlets Pishlets.

Billy had to leave his friends to look after the bussiness and left the Giraffe, Pelly, Monkey and the Duke of Hampshire to clean the rest of the windows.

The Giraffe The Pelly And Me is a funny childrens book that is suitable for kids.

Maori Names

This week I matched English names with Maori names.

We were given clues to help us match the names without using Maori dictonary. The guys names were in highlited in blue to help us match names.

Next I tried to translate a conversation in Maori to English. We were allowed to use the maori dictonary to help us translate the sentences.

For example:
Tēna koutou katoa     Greeting to you all

Ko John taku ingoa    My name is John

Nō Whangarei ahau    Im from Whangarei

Te kau ma waru ōku tau    I am 18 years old

I found this task hard becuse it was my first time doing translating converations from Maori to english.

Resource Requisition | Inquiry

All natural disasters start from bad weather. The materials that are suitable against a volcano eruption are: steel door, chicken wire, aluminum sheets, and concrete walls.

The steel door was to get in and out of the shelter when a natural disaster starts or finishes. This material has been chosen because steel is strong.

The concrete walls are out for the base of the shelter and the roof.  This material has been  chosen to protect against lava because it provides a strong foundation for an emergency shelter.

The aluminum was used for the inside layer to stop lava from coming in.  This material was chosen because aluminum is strong.

The chicken wire was used to hold the shelter together and extra protection against lava.

This material has been chosen to protect against volcanic eruptions because it can give the structure more protection and strength against lava.

Lots of materials can help protect against different types of natural disasters.

Division | Maths

This week we learnt what division is and how to use division.

We made a google slide explaning what division is, place value in division, remainders in division and strategies that we can use in division. First we explained what division is. Division is spliting a gorup into equal peices.

Next we explained strategies that we could use in division. One of the easyest strategies we learnt was multiplcation and pitcures of groups. For example: 3 x 4 = 12 you can reverse that and make it division then the answer would be 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Then we explained what remainders are in division. For example: 149 ÷ 4. 8 ÷ 4 = 2 9 from the 149 is close to 8 so we could do 9 ÷ 4 = 2 r 1. then we divided the 40 by 4 which makes 10. Then we divded the 100 by 4 which made 25. Then we got our total 37 r 1. Instead of having remainder 1 we spilt the 1 into 4 quaters which made .25 and thwen added it on to the 37 which made 37 .25.

Lastly we explained the place value in division. When dividing big numbers and small numbers 10x bigger numbers move to the left once. For example:   120 ÷ 4 = 30. 12 ÷ 4 = 30 10x bigger numbers moves to left once.

Divison is a good strategy that can help you in multiplcation and fractions.

Kapa Haka Preformance

Ls1 attended a Kapa Haka performance in our school hall.

The Kapa Haka group came into our school hall and performed a dance and they were singing Waiata as their entrance. Some of the things we observed in their entrance was that one of the Kapa Haka members blew a Maori traditional horn called the Putatara. Another thing we saw was that another Kapa Haka member talked about the meaning of the Haka and the traditional Maori weapons.

The last thing we did was play a game called Matau and Maui. To play the game you need sticks (The sticks we used were called Rakau). Then a person says Maui or Matau. If the person says Maui we have to grab the stick on our left side. If the person says Matau we have to grab the stick on our right side.

The last thing the Kapa Haka did in their performance was that they performed a Haka. Then our (Panmure Bridge school) Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka and we sang He Honore.

I enjoyed experiencing the performance from the Kapa Haka group. My favourite part about their performance was their Haka and how our school Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka.

Athletics Day Results | Maths

This week, we did a statistical investigation to figure out the average score of each group in Athletics Day.

First, we added up the data sets using a google sheet. To add data sets, we can use repeated addition or multiplication. We wanted to add the data sets up quickly, so we used multiplication. If a data set was 2+3+3+2+1+3+4+2, we could make it easier to solve this equation by doing (4x1) + (3x3) + (2x2) + (1x1) instead. 4x1=4, 3x3=9, 2x2=4, and 1x1=1. We add all of the totals up and it equals 18. This strategy is quicker than repeated addition because instead of adding up the numbers individually, you can add them up all at once.

Then, we needed to find the average group score. We added all of the groups points then divided the total by the amount of classes there are, which is 9. When we add all of the scores 19 + 17 + 19 + 26 + 17 + 24 + 18 + 18 + 24 = 182. Then tried to find the answer out with out using the google sheet formula. First I split 180 into 160 and 20. Then I divided 160 by 2 which made 80. I then took away 40 from the 80 which made 40 and then split 40 into 20. Then I took away 4 from the 20 to make 16. Then I split 16 into 8 2's wich makes 0.22222222 and then added the extra 20 wich made 20.22222222.

It is important to understand how to use statistical investigations because it can make adding, subtraction, multiplying or dividing numbers easier.

Athletics 2020

Panmure Bridge School held it's annual Athletics Day. Athletics Day is based around using the skills we have learnt over the past terms to run, jump and throw. There wrere 10 stations.

One of the stations we went to was called Rob the nest. The aim of this game is to have one person defending the balls and others going out to steal balls from other teams. Each ball is 1 point. If you get tagged you are frozen but you can be saved by a team mate.

There were many other athletic games like sponge relay, life savers, egg & spoon race, etc.

My favourite station was Sponge relay becuase you could get wet and go over and under objects.

We also did sprints. The year 1 - 4 did 50m sprints and the year 5 - 8 did 60m sprints. In the year 6 sprints I came 3rd.

I enjoyed doing sprints and Athletics day and would like to do it again. I would also like to give a big thanks to Mr Ogilvie for making athletics day possible.

Comment Thread

This week for comment thread I commented on Spelman's blogpost.

We were having a conversation about the Film Festival and what movies we liked the most and why we liked it.

Manaiakalani Film Festival

I went to the 13th Manaiakalani Film Festival in Hoyts Sylvia Park.

The first movie was ours, Covid. Our film was about people not hand sanitising and made fun of it.

Next we watched different films from different schools. Some of the films were based on the Covid 19 pandemic.

My favourite film was Tamaki Primary's Comunity Hero film becuase I like how they show dedication to the essential workers.

Screen Play | Writng

Screenplays are scripts that are converted into parts only. The actors line is center aligned under their name. The lines don't need speech marks because it could help what tone to use.

A screenplay scene number should be in all caps. The name also should be in caps and center aligned. If there is any extra information people would put it in brackets under their name.

Screenplays can give some descriptions on how actors should speak and it can also give more detail.

Knowing how to write a screenplay is importaint because actors understand how to say their lines and what their lines are.

Recapping Skills | Maths

This week we recapped the skills and knoledge we learnt from T4W4. The skills I learnt were money and converting measurements.

Fotu and me recapped the skills we learnt and showed each other how to do the skills on a whiteboard. The skill I learnt was that written algorithm has a name for each colum.

For example: The 100's colums name is H becuase it stands for hundreds.

The next skill I recapped was money. Xavier, Taua and me were showing each other on a white board how to add money up and learning how to tell the time. I learnt that written algorithm is a stratagey that can help you tell the time.

I found teaching hard but I enjoyed teaching others about converting measurement and money. I partners were good students becuase they helped me understand the skill.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week we learned how to do a three man settle.

After playing a game we practiced two man settle and three man settle. To do a two man settle the person A had to touch and put the ball under their feet and step under it. Then the person B had to get the ball and run forward. It was the same for the three man settle but with three people.

Lastly we played a game of touch. We had to walk through the game for the people who didn't know how to play the game. In this activity we used each skill that we learnt from the past few weeks.

I enjoyed doing this activity. I found this easy because I have done this before.

The year 5 five group played 4 games and the year 6 played 7 games. First the year 5 group played Sylvia Park a team. The year 5 PBS team lost 4 - 0.

The second game was year 5 PBS team v St Patricks. The game was team tied 1 - 1.

The next game was year 5 PBS vs Sylvia Park b team. The game was tied 2 -2 .

The final game we played was against Stonefeilds A team. Unfortently PBS year 5 team lost 1 - 4. The year 5 PBS team placed 5th.

I enjoyed playing and would like to play against more schools next year.

Money | Maths

NZ money works on a place value system. New Zealand's current money works on the 100's place value.

New Zealand money have 5 different coins and 5 different notes. There are 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, and $2 coins. There are $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar notes.

Here is a example on how the system works. If you had $10 and spent 3.20 the change you would get back is 6. 80 becuase 10 stubtracted by 3.20 = 6.80.

Money can be shown in many different ways. It's importaint to know to use money because it helps people understand the value of money.
